Default Used for?

Exactly what was the Royal Coat of Arms used for? Regimental Sergeant Major? Or?
And, what time period is this example?

St Edward crown so after 1952 but without knowing the size it could be almost anything . I wouldn't think a WO1 badge , Remember all WO1 wore the royal coat of arms not just RSMs.

Fairly large badge. Measurements are 2 in wide by 1 1/2 in high. Two lugs on reverse.

That crown is Victorian, so it's a much earlier beast! Besides which it differs quite a bit in design to that worn by Warrant Officer Class 1 and as a General Sevice device! It's more likely to be a helmet fitting, off a pouch or as DaveC2 found out sometime ago off a safe door!

Thanks for the further thoughts. The badge is flat, a medium gauge brass, and doesn't have any curve to it. The suggestion that it may be a pouch badge seems to have the most merit. (Provenance is not proof, but it came with a small accumulation of other military insignia.)

Are there any unique features for a pouch plate? Are the lugs longer? Three versus two lugs?
