Dad's Army is 50
The TV series Dad's Army is 50 years old today. The first episode was broadcast on 31 July 1968 and the series has been on ever since!
Don't tell him Pike! Tim

And long may it remain in our affections.
Incidentally, anyone who has seen the old 1949 Ealing Studios film 'Whisky Galore' (and I am sure there cannot be many who have not), will no doubt recognise many of the dramatis personae therein who would form the basis for the Croft and Perry Dad's Army characters. Regards, JT |

In the early series Lance Corporal ("they don't like it up em!" / "Don't panic") Jack Jones wore the cap badge of the Leicestershire Regiment. The original title of the series was to be "The fighting tigers". Later he wore full dress of the Royal Warwickshire regiment for a regimental reunion and for his wedding to Mrs Fox in the final episode.
As a member of the Home Guard Platoon based in the fictional Kent town of Walmington-on-Sea he wore the Royal West Kent cap badge with CP1 as the HG unit arm badge. Not Cinque Ports but Croft and Perry the show's creators and writers. Tim

I had an idea he was a Buff in one or two episodes.

Just fantastic, but, important to bare in mind some of the cast had actually been to war themselves, William Ridley in particular, a Somme veteran.

I found this a very good read:
Chapter 3, Arnold Ridley (Famous: 1914-18, Richard Van Emden & Vic Piuk) You need to scroll back a few pages for the start of the chapter. |
