Luke,

I am sure that an ex-Tankie will know exactly but it looks like an Armour Piercing Fin Stabilised Discarding Sabot round (APFSDS). It looks to be a presenation piece (hence the chroming). The round is fired from a large calibre barrel (such as a 120mm Challenger 2 gun) and the large area allows the full force of the charge to be exerted on the round. The sabot petals (the side bits) come away once the round has left the barrel allowing the dart projectile to go hutling towards the target. The combination of the high velocity, the strength of the dart and the long tapering shape is designed to impact into armour and cause maximum penetration of the armour. The end of the fins looks different to CR2 one from memory but I was handling them 12 years ago so they may have changed design or be another nations.

Hope this is of interest.
