Yes it is Portsmouth OTC. The hat suggests pre 1940.

That's interesting, Mike. Makes me now think which cap badges in the British Army have had the longest period of use, unchanged.

Many thanks,

JT

Rank chevrons for starters, c.1800 and going strong.
Good conduct badges 1836 and going strong, at least in theory.

JT, the Brigade of Guards should answer that one.

Rank chevrons. I was thinking only of cap badges, but I suppose there must be all kinds of unaltered insignia that dates back to time immemorial.

Ah yes, the Guards. Comparable to the RA (monarch/crown changes notwithstanding) or am I way off?

Thanks chaps,

JT

The RA cap badge only came into being after the death of Queen Victoria so not an old badge really, but certainly the 3 eldest Guards Regiments.

King's Own Scottish Borderers 1871- 2006? Designation changed from King's Own borderers to King's Own Scottish Borderers in 1887, and the Crowns changed, but the design remained the same.

Without wishing to sound dour or disrespectful, I don't suppose it will be too long before the crown changes once again. It'll seem odd to someone like me who was born within Her Majesty's reign, and who has only ever really known the St. Edward's Crown.

What is the protocol; will the next male monarch wear the Imperial State Crown (as per George VI). Is that a given?

With thanks,

JT

As a matter of interest there were very firm directives about the new sovereign's crown when Q Victoria died. These are in the RAClothing Dept ledger ...... exact specifications, sketch, mandatory etc. etc.

Nevertheless the existing QVC managed to hang on for years on veterans' items and in stores to be used up first. And of course a few Guelphic and other unusual crowns clung on.

I dare say nobody will get very uptight next time, only a few old diehards and collectors!
