VGC with square fonts. Sorry but I have seen several dozens for these for sale on many dealers' websites and they are just too easy to find for this design to have to be made for a single battalion between 1912-20 even with the 2nd/7th and 3rd/7th being raised in late 1914.

I like the Regimentals one, but not the others.

All from the same stable (die). I wouldn’t buy any of them.

I would agree that the Regimentals example seems to have something to it.
Is there any chance that a cache of recently found originals may be at hand?

I’m afraid I have to disagree, you simply don’t get that heavy block font style of lettering on the pre and WW1 era badges. It tends to be slightly smaller. I’ll post some comparisons later.

Hi 41st

I, for one, will be very interested in what you can post. Like the East Yorkshire cyclists, so many fakes and so much information that has been twisted to suit unscrupulous dealers over the years. Look forward to seeing what you post.

Cheers, Tim

As stated above all the first pattern badges I have in my collection have a notably different font, in both style and size, to the usual example that keeps cropping up for offer as a genuine 7th Batt'n badge.
My collection of first pattern badges is as shown in photo 1(Officers lhs & Ors rhs).
Photo 2 shows a comparison between a regular pattern bi-metal example and what I consider to be the common copy. The bi-metal example is in virtually unworn condition and whilst the font may look close to that on the blackened badge it is softer and slightly smaller. BM regular font is approx 3.47mm high whereas the blackened example is approx 3.81mm high. The difference is more noticeable in the hand.
Photo 3 shows a comparison between an EI issue and the badge under discussion where the difference is more noticeable.
photos 4 & 5 shows the comparison between what I consider to be an original example on the left and the badge under discussion. I have enhanced the image and the original one does have more blackened finish left than shows up in the photo.
The pattern of the gems on the band around the crowns also differ between the copy and all the others.
It is also the case that the font on both the Vol Batt'n badges and the "C" spelling used by the 16th Batt'n (photos 6 & 7) are also of the smaller font.
There are blackened Officers examples in the Officers' tray down the bottom.
Hope this is of some help.
Hwyl,
Kevin

Well, this sums it up. The different fonts etc. are quite clear. Will be interesting to see if those badges remain on the sellers lists.

While having a lockdown tidy up I came across this in my collection without knowing what it actually was. I see you have a couple in your VB/Militia display, is it Militia or a generic VB badge. I think the lettering on this is OK too?

Thanks

Keith

Think I’ve read somewhere on here 3rd Militia Bn or generic V.B. . Either way, no doubt a beautiful genuine early badge.

Nothing wrong with that one Keith, great condition too.
At present I think these were worn by the militia as I do have photos of the VBs wearing their specific Batt’n designated badges i.e. 1st VB etc.
I have never come across a reversed metal ORs badge but have seen an Officer’s S&G.
