RAF Chaplain's Assistant?

If you follow the link supplied by Tony above it says it is a "Special Duties Cap Badge". If you click on the image, it says that the Special Duties Cap Badge is worn by certain civilians and Chaplains Assistants.


Are you saying that the information in the link is wrong?

I dont believe the KC version was worn by Chaplains Assistants.

To the best of my knowledge they wore a QC version for a short time before changing to a Cross within a wreath over a scroll.

This badge is illustrated in Wilkinson-Latham's "Badges of the British Armed Forces" and identified as a - female - Chaplain's Assistant's badge. I got one about twenty years ago out of a rummage box for less than a pound and passed it on to a dealer for fifteen quid not much later.

These were indeed worn, as well as shoulder titles withe the denomination 'Church of England', 'Roman Catholic', 'Church of Scotland' and 'Presbyterian, Methodist and United Board' in both blue/blue and red/tan.

They were all female and gave spiritual advice to the WRAF. Otherwise standard RAF offices uniform.

I recently chanced upon one of these and found this thread when trying to identify it. Bosley's also agrees with the RAF Chaplain's Assistant.

In his chapter on RAF Badges in Badges and Insignia of the British Armed Services John Tanner, then Director of the RAF Museum identified the badge as that of a Chaplain's Assistant.

In An Illustrated and Descriptive Catalogue of Air Force Insignia a privately published publication compiled from 1969, Margaret Nobbs and Charles Thomas state that according to RAF Dress Regulations 1953 the cap badge of the WRAF Chaplain's Assistant is a 'Special Duties cap badge in place of the RAF pattern' which is described as in chrome finish ' two rings joined by the eagle across them surmounted by a crown and fastened by two lugs'.

I was given this RAF hat many years ogo by the son of a Dutch chemist who with a team of scientists followed up behind the leading troops in NW Europe, their job was to evaluate any scientific evidence left behind by the retreating Germans. Now, why he was wearing the RAF Chaplains assistant badge I do not know, but he was a he and not a her. John.

Interesting evidence that the badge may indeed also be a generic Special Duties badge as the scientists involved were known to wear the RAF Special Duties badge but I thought that was the letters SD in a circle as shown in Tanner's RAF chapter!

Nobbs and Thomas do not seem to have covered the SD badge.

Thanks for those references. Very useful and does suggest that it was worn by miscellaneous personnel. The side cap must be very rare if not unique.
