Default RN Clearance Diver question

I recently acquired a joblot of RN Clearance Diver badges and within the lot there was a subdued badge for a chief-party office supposedly for MTP kit , is there any such issued item.

Hi Dee

The Multi-Terrain Pattern (MTP) is the standard camouflage pattern of the British Armed Forces. Multi-Terrain Pattern fabric. Hence the badge would be worn if the person was wearing MTP uniform. Epaulette badges for RN personnel when wearing MTP fabric.

The Rank Slides for the MTP Uniform are issued singular "Embroidered in (light) Green on Multi Terrain Patterned Material".

Those shown were for the Combat Soldier 95 Uniform which did not have shoulder straps.

As far as I know the specialty badges have not been issued in either MTP or subdued. However there are many private purchase badges on the market.

IMO it looks like the black in OG insignia found for use by Royal Marines. I’m no expert though mate.

Hi, The badge could be a private purchase item from a naval tailors, or various online military badge shops that churn out all sorts of unofficial items, that however doesn't mean it isn't/wasn't worn! The RN Clearance Diver branch, particularly in the past, were always a bit maverick and into wearing "pirate rig", which was pretty much anything they wanted and often included a mixture of No 4 AWD, DPM, submariners jumpers, Norwegian shirts and track suits/sports rig. There is (or was) a naval tailors (Tailor Lee) in Queen Street Portsmouth, who produced a number of badges for the diving branch for wear with combat kit, in both black on olive green and yellow on dessert DPM. I've attached pictures of badges in my collection, that were produced by him and given to me by a diver friend who wore them during the Gulf War! I did also have epaulette slides, that were the diver helmet branch badge for the various ranks, in green and desert DPM, but regrettably (now) sold them.

Hope its of interest

Tony

Tailor Lee also made subdued black-on-green ‘Royal Navy Commando’ titles in the same style before the official subdued versions became available.

That's right! He also made some black on green subdued Royal Fleet Auxiliary shoulder titles, that I wore on my joint MA/CMT course at DMSTC Keogh Barracks in 2005. I also have subdued titles with Royal Navy, Royal Navy SPO Team and Royal Navy Force Protection, all produced by him, as you say, before the official issue titles came out!
