21st S.A.S Regt (Artists} Volunteers.
I have purchased a silver plated tankard with the following inscription:
Presented to S/Sgt Fred Browne by WO5 & Sgts mess. 21st Special Air Service Regt. (Artists) Volunteers. Using google I have found that the designation 21st Special Air Service Regiment (Artists) Volunteers was first used from 1st April 1967 and that therefore the tankard cannot be older than that date. Unfortunately the inscription on the tankard is undated and there is no reference as to why S/Sgt Browne was presented with a tankard. Given the secrecy surounding the individuals who serve in the regiment is there any way that I can find out anything about S/Sgt Fred Browne? I suspect that he may have recently been deceased as the tankard was sold by a house clearance dealer. Last edited by High Wood; 05-10-13 at 02:45 PM. |

21 SAS
hi,
I think you would need to ask a person who served with 21 in that period. We have members on the Forum who qualify. Will send a PM. Cheers, Johan |

Johan,
thank you for the update. I have tried to send you a PM but your inbox is full. The tankard is incredibly difficult to photograph as the silver plate reflects everything in the immediate area which then appears in the photograph. My feeling is that the tankard was presented to S/Sgt Fred Browne by his colleagues when he left the unit but this is only a guess. I would like to know more if possible. Simon. |
