This may not be a badge but if your interested in the 42nd it may be of interest. If anyone could transcribe the text I would be greatful.

Entire letter dated 1st June 1808 from Gibson Thomson Craig Edinburgh to Messers William Wilson & Sons kilt manufactures Bannockburn.

An order for kilts for the 42nd Highlanders comprising 2019 privates and 116 sergeants.

On this date the 1/42nd were in Gibraltar with 943 men under Lt.Col James Sterling, 400 of which had transfered from the 2/42nd a few years earlier.
The 2/42nd were in Perth on a recruiting drive then shortly moved to Kilkenny where they recruited 150 Irish Militia volunteers into their ranks, perhaps another 1,100 men?

Two months after this letter was written the 1st Bn shipped to Portugal to take part in the Peninsular War. A year later the the 2nd Bn under Lord Blantyre with 700 men arrived in the Peninsular.
Letter is dificult to decipher in particular {could make up the quantity of hose? to the kilts some? of them by June coach 3/4 each pair for} X65 privates X3 sgt X2 musician.
Craig has signed in two places perhaps he was a government clothing agent?

Hi Ron, could the word in front of coach not be “fast”? And earlier in the letter are they talking about quality of kilt?

I think the second paragraph reads along the lines of; “We have to observe that the quality of what you have sent us is much inferior to that by ? .... part of which we ? with the Col. and as he is very particular we trust that what you have to send will be equal in every respect to that ?. Let us know in course the ? (Real?) quantity you gave the 42nd.”

Yes its probably 1860-70 period, bit of artistic licence by the printer the Maltese Cross style was not used by he Regiment.

You may have noticed that photobucket has removed most of my old posts
this is because I stopped paying them for bad service.
Quite a few people has asked me to reinstate items on the 42nd thread.
I will attempt to do so over time. Here are the first batch.
1. Early 19th C. pewter bonnet badge flat cast with integeral lugs, tooled leather rosette with pinked edges and a red cloth backing. Sunburst emerging from the circlet.
2. 1st/42nd pewter bonnet badge worn by battalion coys circa 1840s.
Ex Arthur Strutt.
3. 2/42nd (Reserve Battalion) ORs pewter button 1842-50.
single cast integeral lug with old collectors ticket attached.
4. Early 19th C. copper alloy plaque. Two nail holes where it has been fixed to something. Body of Sphinx covered in hair and a ghost image of St. Andrew above the back where it has been removed from the die.

The first two badges are not in my collection but are on my wants list.
1. Pewter badge, head to left of L.
2. Silver badge, head to left of L.
3. Brass badge, head under the L, laquer staining.
4. Silver plated badge, head under the L.
5. Brass badge head under the R.
6. Brass badge head under the R, non voided.
