Default WWI Soldier Photo Unit ?

I have recently come across this great photo postcard of an australian soldier A W Davis, who wrote a most interesting message on the reverse about being sent to Alexandria in Egypt for being 'Nervy' and not many of our Battalion left.. Alas it is dated (22/7/15) and addressed to Birdie, but not posted (probably sent in envelope)... I did find a Postcard addressed to a Maude Le Gallichan (Wife of Alf) of Jersey Channel Island whom appears to be Birdies sister the postcard is sent from Australia with a NSW 1d red stamp on it.. Enough clues now... Does anyone think they know the unit flashes?

Did you check the WW1 nominal roll?

There are several A W Davis listed there. Only one officer it appears, but he is a Major.........Major Algernon Wiseman Davis from 13th Battalion.

If you ID him, you should consider sending a copy of the image to www.anzacsonline.net.au.

It's an up and coming and very significant project documenting the Australian WW1 diggers.

Thanks for the advice... I presumed the chap was a private rather than an officer as I couldn't see any badges of rank!?

Nice enhancement griff!

In the absence of better advice, with my old eyes, I guess I took that dark spot on his epaulette to be a pip.

Yes! The nominal roll is on line. BWEF has given you a link on your other thread..

Donny

I dont think its a pip..... I think it says "CEF" over "AUSTRALIA"..... CEF could be AEF or something like that ..... but he is a Soldier and not an Officer IMO?

Whats needed is a high resolution scan (600dpi or higher) and I would be able to tell you exactly what its says.

Thanks Guys, Okay... It is Major Algernon (Alfred) Wiseman Davis MC MiD CdG..
From Private to Major... This Guy got some shell shock, gassing and other injuries and made it through.. Going thru a lot of paperwork on the Aussie sites.. it was the discharge date from Alex in Egypt that tied in nicely with the message on the back of the postcard (I will scan later) and exact match on signature The Jersey link I will dig deeper, but his first name is Norman-French which is the local tongue in Jersey...

Considering his promotion and the card being addressed to "Birdie" it might pay you to do a little more research into this man and his connections.

Birdy/Birdie was one of the nicknames of General William Birdwood, who was the commander of the ANZACS at Gallipoli.

Please excuse my ignorance but is it usual to have a Australian cap badge the same size as a collar badge? As this post card.
Tony.
