Advice on this picture please
It has been suggested that this soldier could be wearing Canadian insignia so I've posted in the Canadian section for any advice or words of wisdom.
It is supposed to be of 2 men from Totley village in Sheffield, England (so why one should be wearing Canadian insignia I don't know) The cap badge is difficult to see but I wondered if the cloth shoulder title gave some clue? Many thanks, Ivan |

Advice ......
badger123:
The person in the photo looks to be a Canadian, based on the style of shoulder titles. The collars appear to be general issue maple leaves, and the hat badge is harder to make out, but in a pinch I`d guess it is to the Canadian Engineers. Hope this helps. Cheers, John S. |

Concerning your "comes from Sheffield but is badged Canadian" I've seen quite a few names on local war memorials to men who served with the AIF so why not Canada too?

Canadian Regiments also recruited in the UK.... better rates of pay and also the chance of citizenship as well

Good day Ivan,
Can't comment about the CEF recruiting within the UK. However, a lot of soldiers in the CEF were recent English immigrants to Canada or were first generation Canadians with UK roots. An example would be my paternal great grandfather, grandfather and great-uncles, coming from the Bridgenorth area near Wales. They all served in the CEF. A lot joined for patriotic reasons, 'King and Country' and all that. Some saw this as an opportunity to get a paid trip back to the 'auld sod' as it were. So the picture may show a soldier who was an English immigrant, who joined the CEF and met up with a friend who stayed in England; and had a photo taken to remind them of their reunion. A probable explanation, I think. Ian

Sounds very plausible Ian, I will pass that very useful piece of information on.

The patch on his shoulder looks like the blue on red CE - Canadian Engineers.
Phil PS Just saw that Postwarden showed this on another thread.
