Default Tiny KRRC badge

Hi all,

This one also has me puzzled - a blackened cast metal KC KRRC badge non-voided, lugged east-west and only 23x16mm. Churchill states that the KRRC didn't wear collars after 1881 except on mess dress and these were bugle badges. The 1st Cadet Battalion KRRC has a similar collar in Churchill 1473 but mine has The King's Royal Rifles Corp to the circle. The battle honours are present on the four limbs of the Maltese Cross.

I think perhaps a sweatheart badge but not with lugs I would have thought.

One for Ry I would think, comments appreciated, cheers Dean.

Hi Dean
Is it small enough to be for a cord boss, though those badges usually have wire fittings?
Cheers,
Alex

Dean, I think what you have was worn on the busby.

Thanks Rob - guess that fits nicely with the size but the 3rd VB East Surrey's badge I posted was also lugged and was also worn on busby and slightly bigger.

Cheers Dean

I believe it is an other ranks pagri badge, as worn on a small red patch of felt on the Foreign Service Helmet. The badge on the fur cap (busby) was indeed larger.

Smile KRRC pagri badge

Top marks Toby - great to have a fairly definitive ID based on photographic exclusion of the busby badge, much appreciated, cheers Dean.

The officers badge for that helmet was a similar size and is listed and illustrated in the Dress Regulations for 1900.

I enclose a picture of the larger, busby badge in wear.

I wonder if the badge on the pagri photo is actually the rare medium sized one rather than this tiny version. The Tel-el-Kebir honour (pre-1905) comes in three sizes with the King's crown.

Here's a another tiny KRRC badge.
This one has N/S lugs and no honours on the arms of the cross. It came with a pile of pre- 1928 Bakelite Rifle Brigade buttons from eBay last year.
Cheers.

My pleasure Dean, the 1900 Dress Regs are highly recommended as they come with a great deal of useful illustrations and information. Facsmiles are readily available and not at all expensive.

I am not sure Al, but I would surmise that this is perhaps an OR's Field Service Cap badge. When the first FSC came into use there were no purpose designed badges for it and most units used their collar badge (or in the case of fusiliers and light infantry, part of their shoulder title) until around 18 months later when special badges were designed, or modified from existing patterns.

A QVC die cast tiny blackened KRRC badge (27x16mm) to add to the fun on my tiny KC KRRC thread. May have had wire attachments or a lug post not sure. Wire would make it for the cord boss I would imagine but could well be the small remnant of a north-south pair of lugs.

This may also be the small pagri badge for the foreign service helmet. Or an early FSC badge.

Cheers Dean

There appear to be 'splits' in the vestiges of those fixings, possibly indicating lugs, as opposed to wires for attachment to a chord boss. Not particularly clear though.

Nice little badge.
