Default Royal flying corps cap badge original?

Hi

I found this today for a couple of quid so suspect this to be fake?

Can anybody suggest if this is a good original or junk please?

Thank you
Martyn

I don't like commenting on these because I am not sure but here goes. As far as I remember, there was a thread saying that if the F overlaps the bottom of the crown where the oval opening is, it is not a good sign. It looks like yours has that defect but the photos aren't close up enough to see properly.
Cheers,
Alex

Thank you I don't think that this one does. Are you thinking of the oblong flaw above the F this hasn't got that.

All the best

I think the referenced concern is what I have circled in white. What strikes me is that he crown seems to take a noticeable dip at that point.

Just my thoughts.

Thank you Terry. So that indicates a fake? Do you know what evidence the is for this? May it not be as variant? There must have been a fair number of makers using different dies?

All the best

Martyn,

I can't say for sure that it's a fake as I stopped collecting RFC and WW1 aviation over 30 years ago. I can only say I had no badges like that, nor is it one I would want. If there should turn up some kind of pictorial confirmation that such a badge existed and was worn, I would of course, change my mind.

My previous post was to point out what jumped out at me immediately as I saw the badge and what would be an issue in my mind.

Thank you Terry. You have some nice stuff. Thanks for your help with the badge. I have since shown the badge to a very experienced collector friend of mine who has said that there is nothing wrong with this badge and that it is fine.

All the best

That's good news, and the reason I don't like commenting on these. I was not remarking on the kink in the edge of the crown more where the F meets the crown. One some fakes it blurs into the bottom of the crown and your photo is small and difficult to see the exact details.
Here is a link to a post where it is really blatant so probably an old die:
https://www.britishbadgeforum.com/fo...ighlight=badge

I've added a couple of snip images of good ones showing the distinct line where the F meets the crown.
Cheers,
Alex
