Default Blue Patrol Uniform

I needed to know a bit more about "Blue patrols" so I bought these, quite a clear crown mark on the epaulettes, and there may have been collar badges sewn on?, Major Steel perhaps?

The hat is fitted with a nice other ranks slidered Devonshire Regiment cap badge but I doubt its always been there? Is there any significance to the red piping? Is it Officers or Other Ranks?

Couldn't find a (Major) Steel in the Devon Regt, but those ribbons could be those of someone captured at Dunkirk.

I should have said I bought the hat and jacket from the same seller but hat jacket and badge could easily have come from 3 different places?

There appears to be a Defence medal ribbon in the centre.

More likely served at Dunkirk, made it back home and remained in the UK for the rest of the war.

I hadn't noticed the medals to be in the wrong order, maybe a Major could get away with something like that for a short while?

I notice sapper533 has a couple of similar hats in his album, does that make this similar coloured example Royal Engineers too?

I would suggest the collar badge was a Gunner grenade. On Blues, it was worn without the Ubique scroll BUT on Blue Patrols no collar badge was worn.

How were metal collar badges attached, it would appear that the lugs and split pin would interfere with the collar studs if they went through the collar?

RA Officer grenades as mentioned are gold wire.

True but I was speaking more generally, some Regiments don't have embroidered collar badges?

Further research points to the hat being Royal Engineers as suggested above, it would seem that for other "Royal" titled Regiments the lower band of the hat would be red with the red piping around the top, and for non "Royal" titled Regiments such as the Devonshire Regiment for example an all blue hat with only the top band of red piping, hopefully I have all that correct now?

But I'm still unsure if any of these hats are "Blue Patrols" or if that is just the uniform?
