No, they were (and still are, with Queen Elizabeth II cypher) worn by "Staff Officers" - full colonels and brigadiers, who will have belonged to regiments or corps but at that rank level wear that design of button with lion above crown cap badges.

Ok, thanks! I did not know that! I know that in caps they don't wear regimental badges...but I did not know that with buttons happen the same..

It looks like they do have (or had) a gilt finish, just dull and worn.
A touch of lemon juice should bring up what's left of it. |
