Default WW1 ? Trench cap marks

Afternoon all, bit of help needed if anyone has any information, I’ve tried looking online and the forum to see if a marking to soft trench cap is ok but just cannot find information on the year mark, it’s probably me !! It’s a cap marked what looks to be
57
W^D
D or O

The last letter just can’t tell between a D or O , just wanted to know if this dates to a WW1 period , I’m thinking @ 1916/17 ?? Any help much appreciated

Gerard

Found a post on GWF that may help.

"All Caps have either an O for caps made 1915-early 1917 or a P for deliveries after early 1917. "

The single letter is thought to relate to a place rather than date- though head wear is mainly marked O or P. The letter equals year does not apply Great War.
Regards, Paul.
Sorry- I see the link is to a Joe Sweeney thread that explains this, he was an expert in such matters. Regards, Paul.

Just for purity there was no such item of headdress called a trench cap they were officially designated as soft caps and certainly an unwise item of headdress in the front line trench. Liners and materials changed between authorisation and withdrawal from service. There is much debate about letter codes though I no am not certain an authoritative answer has yet been found in any publications of the time or later.
