And there were various types over the years, normally made in brass.

BW Barrack Warden badge??
I have a poster from a 1938 British encyclopedia which says "Äll the Badges of the British Army". Among the tailenders is a large BW badge (which I have never seen) that is supposedly for a Barrack Warden. Is this correct and does anyone have the actual badge?

Thanks Jerry for the info. Never seen the badge and don't have Westlake.
Just what is a Barrack Warden? How many would there be on average in one location? |

One per barracks. He was an ex-soldier who having completed his military service was employed to be a caretaker for the site.

Quoted from Westlake:-
BARRACK WARDENS These were civilian appointments which were held by service pensioners that had a record of good conduct and held a rank of at least sergeant.

Revisiting this thread. An alternative explanation for the wreath and cypher badge is that the Sgt is the regiment's school master. Think educating young soldiers not school boys. Each regiment had a school master on its establishment which would explain why the Sgt is the sole wearer of the badge amongst his peers.
This is my favoured identification for the badge. The GVR badge worn without the wreath was certainly worn by a number of units and individuals including the MPSC, Barrack wardens ampngst others. Last edited by Alan O; 26-07-22 at 07:00 PM. |

This is on ebay. The badge is the small GV Cypher without wreath but he does not look like he is Provost Service to me so I suspect he is Royal Defence Corps or one of the other users of this badge.
