Default Royal Hong Kong Defence Force

This badge has just sold for a relatively large amount of money.

Now it maybe old age or pehaps my failing eyesight, but does the crown look to be a different colour to the rest of the badge, or is it a trick of the light?

Yep, looks like it's a "cut and shut", crown not original to the rest of the badge.

That is exactly what I was thinking. The item description didn't mention any repairs. It just sold for £304.

I've no knowledge of the unit's insignia - was there a version of the badge without the crown, crown later added as a legitimate modification?

Looks like a post 1953 badge with the crown replaced by an earlier one.

Original Pre 1953 versions should be voided while post 1953 badges are not voided.

I don't like it myself. I think someone spent £304 on a fantasy badge.

Crown is definitely from another badge.

Well Spotted, Simon!
It's definitely an 'add-on'. To be fair, Barry may not have spotted it either while listing it I think.

But these Singapore/Malaya/HK items are going for ridiculous amounts for quite some time now and Barry seems to be having a constant supply of items from SE Asia. I'm hopping all the Malaya faddists have their fill and then maybe, maybe I can someday hope to get a Straits Settlements Police badge cheap

According to the seller's description,

"An original other rank's cap badge of the Royal Hong Kong Defence Force. This is the actual badge illustrated as 911 in British Colonial Badges/Renfrews. King's crown. Approx. 10 cm x 8 cm; two lugs to rear. A fine example."

I have a copy of Renfrew's book and it does appear to be the same badge. If it is then clearly Mr Renfrew didn't spot it either.

Hard to understand how it wasn't spotted, particularly given the voided / non-voided issue raised in post no. 5.

The other give away for this not being part of the original badge is that the hollow backing to the body of the badge is quite crisp while the hollow backing to the crown is blurred and lacking in detail.

I would have expected both to be either crisp or blurred.
