SIH
There was an officers bronze version and an other ranks one for sale at Clanfield recently. They were not particularly expensive considering their rarity. Both gone now, but the pics are still there.

South Irish Horse
Hi,
could someone tell me if this item was worn by a WW1 soldier or if it is a replica. It cost twenty six pounds and was sold as an original. Any help would be much appreciated as I'm new to all of this and putting together a classroom display. Kind regards Pic1.jpg pic2.jpg Last edited by South Irish Horse; 18-06-12 at 09:39 PM. |

A bit of brass nothing more
Hi,
I think, for what it's worth, you've been sold a 'Pup' there. Get a refund if you can because that style of badge can be picked up for between £4 and £6. See post number three above for a comparison between good and fake. |

Thank you Doug.
I was disappointed to read that. I would love to have a genuine one for the display and to wear on Patrick's Day. How much would a genuine badge actually cost? Did they all look the same? Are there any features I should look out for or avoid? Kind regards. |

Genuine SIH badge
Could not edit the original post to add this image, so have made another post.
This one is a genuine badge, solid and with a slider. This came from a deceased estate with medals and buttons and a photograph from 1914 showing this badge in the centre of a montage of photos taken in May or July 1914 |

This is a recent buy not sure about the colour(more bronze than gilt/brass) but it has the look and feel of a genuine badge,(lugs appear to be replaced)opinions welcome.

A nice badge won from Bosleys recently. South Irish Horse rare officers gilt cast cap badge with small slider. That's my funds for the year gone

SIH pouch badge
Hi Gaz,
Even rarer than a cap badge, it's actually an SIH officers pouch badge. Though I'd have expected it to have screw stubs on the rear and not a slider. Might be a variation. A very nice purchase though all the same. |

Thanks for the info Doug. Do you have any photos or other documentation showing its use?

SIH pouch badge
Hi Rockape,
Just the piece from the Irish Sword quoted from the first page of this topic: Quote:
And another photo of two more, one in gilt and one in bronze. In the article from the Irish Sword there is a painting of the SIH uniforms and the pouch badge is used on the flap of the pouch, also on the front of the shoulder strap with a whistle attached by a short chain. The badge is also shown on the extended collars of the officers mess dress and I feel this is the example you have. I'll dig out a colour photo I have of the illustration and see if I can upload it here. Last edited by Grevisk; 13-09-12 at 02:36 PM. Reason: To add additional information |

SIH pouch badge
Hi again,
Here are some photos from the article mentioned above and a black and white photo of Capt JW Bayliss SIY and SIH, you can just see the pouch badge and chain in this one, only if you look closely.... |
