There was one of these listed on an auction site.
The seller reckoned it was a very rare officers' button and was Georgian and that the unit came from Scotland or Canada and served in the American War of Independence.
I think it sold for £88.

As they say this is "not my period", but I looked into it a little out of curiosity, and found:

"Culloden - Culloden Battalion of Volunteers, commanded by D.G. Forbes of Culloden, transfer their services to the local militia

Inverness Journal Friday, July 22, 1808"

http://www.ambaile.org.uk/gd/newspap...=0&startyear=*

Scroll down, a lot of it is in English!

Interesting one this. They are not featured in the Militia lists ending in 1805, so given the information provided above, I think one can safely assume they were around between 1805 and 1808.

Good luck with the research!

Cheers, Neil

Default More Culloden Volunteers Buttons

Here are two more versions of 'Culloden Volunteer' company buttons, currently for sale on ebay. I have seen notifications of commissions for this company in the London Gazette around 1804.

Have to say i think the latest post should go more in the fake and forgery section look like they were made yesterday and in my opinion nothing to to do with the Georgian British raisings of volunteers. But fair play the seller who had these at £120 some months ago and no reduced them seems to have sold one so it shows you can sell most tat.
