Default Sheffield City/City of Sheffield/ S Wales Constabulary

Good Evening,
Can anyone tell me why the Sheffield City and City of Sheffield Police titles seem to have both been used in KC/QC ? and which wording was used first? Also, the since the centers of the badges were different (coat of arms and shield) was the shield ever worn as a collar badge, as the coat of arms was? Re the South Wakes Constabulary. Which center was used first on the wreath cap badge? POW feathers or ER? and when was the Constabulary title dropped/

Thanks in advance

The use of the various titles are as follows (in date order) on helmet plates:-

1. QVC wreath helmet plate. "Sheffield Borough Police". Worn through to
1893 when "City" status was awarded.

2. QVC wreath helmet plate. "Sheffield City Police".

3. KC wreath helmet plate. "Sheffield City Police".

4. KC garter/star helmet plate. "Sheffield City Police".

5. QC garter/star helmet plate. "Sheffield City Police".

6. QC star helmet plate (final issue). "City of Sheffield Police".

The shield and bottom scroll WAS worn as collar/lapel badge, but only by Senior Officers. It was quite a small badge. This was followed latterly by a second issue which was a small representation of the full arms. Again by Senior Officers only.

South Wales Constabulary. The EIIR centre wreath was the first issue. The second issue featured the PoW plumes.

Dave.
