Lot of Cap badges + dragoon items picked up, identification needed !
Hey all,
Picked up this lot last week to a guy from the Royal Canadian Dragoons, it came with a bunch of German items he captured as well. I was wondering what you all thought and if I could have some help on identification, especially the Elk Badge with the "L". There looks to be an italian stitched badge as well. What I personally find neat is the red cloth patch insignia with the original design cut out included. Thanks! |

Hey CP in the 4th pic from the left, don't you recognise the Canadian Seaforth (Elk badge with the "L") cap badge. Also included in the pic a nice Italian Army medical officer cloth cap badge.

Hey Jo,
Thanks, I wasn't quite sure about the Seaforth badge as there were others with a similar design, does it look WW2 issue to you? |

The ROYAL CANADIAN DRAGOONS/CANADA flash and 5th Div patch with RCD on it are quite scarce. Nice haul.

The Seaforth badge is the one that was approved for the unit, but the regiment preferred the imperial pattern of the stag's head with no crown, and no "L". It is a Second World War era badge.

Thanks for the info, as requested here are close ups of the rarer two badges. I am liquidating all of these and am considering offers/ trades (I collect NWMP items) - saving up for the next purchase of a Lord Strathcona's Group

Hey again,
I should have mentioned these items all came from one member of the R.C.D. who's medals and pictures were kept by the family. The cloth flash/shoulders were on his uniform, and I wouldn't be surprised if the Italian/german stuff he captured or traded for. Apparently there was a bag 6 or 7 times larger full of his items which was picked apart by his brothers in the 70's. |

Which leads me to the question, why hasn't a Canadian regiment ever used an elk? Every other ungulate gets a badge (or two, or three) -- moose, deer, caribou, even the fantasy mooke or else or carideer from the 16th Light Horse -- but no wapiti for me?
With the exception of the 107 East Kootenay, which would qualify as the worst drawn elk in history if that's what it is supposed to be, I can't think of a single one. Seems a western regiment might have opted for a mighty bull elk somewhere along the line. I guess a European would say we have several elk badges, if only because they have no elk and call moose elk. Could have led to fun trench conversations: "Nice elk." "Where?" "On your badge." "That's a moose." "Moose?" "Yeah, not a wapiti." "Whatyousay?" "Wapiti!" "DUCK!" "Where?" "O dear..."

ungulates!?
Ungulates!? Wow, you don't hear that used in a sentence too often...somebody has been reading too much "Field and Stream"!?
There is only one "ungulate" worthy of a Canadian badge and it is not a bunch of sissy deer (of whatever variety you choose) or pretty horsies (take that AB Dragoon lovers). I speak of the mighty Bison. Kicks ass on any antelope, springbok, deer, elk, moose, caribou, blah blah, any day of the week, hooves down! The Buffalo rule.

Hi Capbadge, BTW the Imperial German medals are the Iron Cross 2nd Class (EK2) and the Hesse Bravery Medal. The Hesse state decoration is the equivilent to the EK 2 f. As there is no Hindenberg Cross on the group, the medal bar was constructed pre-1933 - before the Nazis came fully to power.
