Pin with roman coins
Hello,
I've discovered this pin in my Grandfather's belongings. He was a pilot in the Royal Navy in the 50's. I'm not sure what it is for, whether it would have been his or one of my Great Grandfathers. Please can anyone help me identify it, or point me in the right direction? Many thanks in advance. Raechel |

The two silver coins are mid 3rd century radiates....
The second from left is probably an Iron Age gold stater from the ?mid 1st c BC. The Roman gold aureus at right is Aelius Caesar AD 136-9. The identification so far is what I can see but If you could do a better detailed photograph. The inscription would be useful, although the obverse (heads) are quite diagnostic. I will send you my email address so you can send me something a bit better. Collecting military badges is my hobby but my day job is as a museum numismatist. It would be useful if you had an idea where your Gt Gfather got them from. If your GG was on the western front of the 1st WW - particularly the Somme area - that would fit perfectly. Unfortunately I only know so far as my Grandfather was definitely in the Royal Navy. I know my Great Grandfather on my paternal Grandmother's side was at war as he came back shell shocked but that must have been WW2. I'll try and dig into that some more. Thanks again, Raechel |

Besides the Roman coins the bar seems to represent a set of medal ribbons.
The 1st has what seems to be a rosette on it, the 2nd a Mention in Dispatches leaf. The 3rd & 4th are unknow. If you can give details of your relatives service i.e. Service number, Full name, Unit(s) etc I am sure a member of this fine forum maybe able to give you more information. Jerry

Thanks Jerry!
I've been going back through and my GGG is about the correct age. His name is Alfred Bertram Hazelgrove and I found someone in the Rifle Brigade in 1914 of that name. The number is 164, 205541. |

The gold 'stater' is Iron Age c 50BC - possibly French rather than British
The two (identical) silver Roman coins are probably of Volusian AD 251-3 The gold Roman coin at right is Lucius Aelius Caesar AD 137. Once I'm off furlough and back in my office I will be able to consult all the coin books etc we have! |
