Default Canadian - What is this Monster?

Gentlemen,
what is this rather large Gilding Metal General Service style Maple? I refer to at as a "Monster" as it measures 60 x 55mm. At one stage it was lugged but an old replacement slider has since been fitted. Although the crown looks more like a QE2 Crown in style, I suspect the badge is actually Victorian? I suspect it may be an early pattern (pre 1900s) G.S. Glengary?

Can anyone help?

Andy

Looks like a good project for our mutual pal Dave! 2 new lugs on it and a nice donor slider for a future repair job! apart from that - haven't a clue what it is!

John,
I'm sure Dave would find it a Breeze restoring this one. However it still retains some of the original gilt finish and has a patina that would be lost when subjected to the heat that Dave uses!! The slider is locally made too and much thicker, longer and wider than the standard period slider! Which adds to the authenticity IMO.. (Sorry Dave this won't be heading to Tamworth, but plenty more stacking up for a trip to the menders!!)

Andy,
I have a copy of the pre 1920 Mazeus book and the QVC on an 1870 Militia badge is exactly the same as the one on yours. Will look for the rest of it today.
David

Found it. Its referred to as Canadian Militia.

To add to David's id, it appears to be an officer's gilt pattern that has been purposely refitted with the slider. I think in this case I would leave the slider on it. It was probably done for wear on the glengarry. It is circa Boer War era General List badge. By General List, it could be worn by unassigned personnel or by members of a unit that had no authorized badge.

Bill & David,
many thanks! A rather nice badge, which will be added to my listings soon! Any ideas on a fair start price?

Andy

This is a helmet badge as worn during the South African. As regulations stated that badges, when applied to the helmet, could not penetrate the pugaree it is possible that the slider is a contemporary fixture.
