... Just for interest. This is the earlier helmet plate, 1844-60, on the bell top shako. Note the plate is a full star and separate from the crown. The PAOLYC being "Light Dragoons" up until the early 1870s.

* Note also that there is no "hatching" behind the LYC ..... and appears to have been japanned or blackened in some way once upon a time. We have an example in the Officers Mess at the Squadron.

....the centre pieces from the early plate and the later. Note the earlier has voided lettering and the backing plate has either been japanned in the past OR maybe a cloth (blue) backing that was moth eaten over the years?

You find that with much later items too. My Gloucestershire helmet plate centre isnt a match for the centre.
