New HMPS rank badge's arrived today
New HMPS rank badge's arrived today I have just enough for 10 Officers on Rememberance Parade so long as I do not get any Supervising officers or Custodial managers attending when they get wind I have the New insignia.
Until a couple of weeks ago I had no idea they were being produced until I read HMPbadges post. 1-Bar Each side = Officer 2-Bar each side = Supervising Officer 3-Bar each side = Custodial Manager They are clutch Back and I fear not very strong I am advised these are the first production run and superior quality is being sourced same to be issued for the Cenotaph parade. The Crome Nurled finish bars have a very American look to them non are maker marked. Regards Stephen |

Well done mate, I'm glad you got them. Take it from me though, make some sort of template so everyone knows how to space them otherwise one will have them an inch above the HMPS titles, another will have them too close etc and make sure they are all straight as well.

Badge
Nice to see them as an official issue badge at last, however they do look very similar to the badges of rank worn by the Special Constabulary.
Thanks for sharing Stephen. Regards Destro |

As a current serving Officer in HMPS, I'm shocked at just how difficult it is to get ANY No.1 uniform items at all, least of all any badges!

It's interesting to see how these badges are re-introduced from time to time for a variety of purposes. I suspect that they first saw the light of day in the 1930's when they were utilised by the Metropolitan Police as part of the rank system for Hendon graduates to that force. (Station Inspectors and Junior Station Inspectors). The appended photo shows the residue of the stock which were found in the Met. Police stores in the 1960's. Of course, as pointed out by others, they are now worn by special constables in many parts of England & Wales to denote their various ranks.

Found this image on line (Perhaps the most Famous fictional Prison Officer) notice the bars for Principal Officer rank introduced after the Mountbatten report I think around 68 Two Brass bars and one Bar for a Senior Officer,
Re inventing of the Wheel I think. Regards Stephen |

I've always wondered if senior ranks at that time wore the chrome badge featured and all normal Officers wore the brass version, or was it just a slow issue of the chrome version and the old dinosaurs keeping their brass badges for as long as they could? You know what it was like with all the blue tommy time in eppaulettes

At this time only senior ranks wore rank bars Officers just HMP Sholder titles,
Tommy timeins wore brass insignia, but the unpopular anodised cap badges shoulders and buttons belt buckles were issued items. I recall officers in the early 90's still wearing Brass cap badges and brass key chains. I also have anodised senior rank bars in my collection along with brass ones. The military Patten chromed Pips were introduced with the French Blue uniform early 1970's my father was issued with this in 1975 officers also wore blue shirts while SO, PO and Chief officers wore white. In this photo the uniform should be French Blue and not black but TV artistic licence at work. By still a good image of a Pincipal Office. Regards Stephen |
