Default Victorian Crowned Blackened Maltese Cross "5" Rifles Sealskin Cap Badge.

Does anyone know what unit this badge was worn by please?
It's mounted on an oval black boss on a Sealskin cap which has black cords and a black top and is fitted with a black over red horsehair plume.

Leigh,

The 5th V.B. (Ardwick) Bn. The Manchester Regiment wore a very similar one.

I have been searching for one for some time.

Is it yours?

regards

The seller is in Rochdale, so it hadn't travelled too far from Ardwick.
Looks like a little bit of wear to the fur, the patent finish on the chinstrap's congealed and peeled, but it's looking good.
Nice to have the "Turks head" on the plume too, so often these are missing from the caps.

I look forward to seeing a photo when you get it.

Here is what the one in the museum looks like.

regards

PS They have put an officers plume on it by mistake. The actual plume is as you know horsehair, and the colours are reversed.

Thanks, the cords on that one look dark green, as do the toggles on the frogging shown behind it, do you know if they were originally dark green or if they've faded from black?
Assuming that all is well on close inspection it's nice that the one I've acquired is complete down to Turk's head, plume, badge, boss and chinstrap.
I can download some photos now.

Leigh,

I also have a 1st VB Manchester Regt O/R's sealskin with green cords, so mine matches the museum one albeit a different VB of the same regiment.

Not enough examples to be sure.

Another nice cap, is it missing a blackened metal crown from the boss?

No, as it is, seen others.

I assume the large Maltese Cross underneath sufficed for the O/R's but the officers of the 1st VB did wear a crown on their boss.

Here is another of mine, a 5th VB Officers post 1898.

Yes, I was pleased to get it, I think two made offers, I met the counter offer.
It'll stay as is, no reapplying a patent finish or polishing the leather etc.

Great to see the two examples of this type of cap you have shared in this thread Simon, wonderful items both, as is Leigh's example on which I have commented in the headdress section.
