Default RE Chemical Warfare Group Insignia

The arm insignia for Chemical Warfare Groups RE in WW2 was " a rectangle evenly divided into three vertical strips of green, yellow and red"

Can any tell me if there is any significance in the choice of these colours or was it just a random choice that fitted the purpose?

Not sure about red, but based on the shell markings the most lethal German poison gas of WW1 were known as Yellow Cross (Mustard Gas) and Green Cross (Chlorine and Phosgene). That may be a connection. Mike

I may be wrong but did not the RE Special Brigades wear an armlet in those colours in WW1?

From the www: [Canadian] Engineer Special Brigade troops in World War 1 wore an armband - Red/White/Green vertical stripes Possibly this translated in World War 2 into Red/Yellow/Green?
