Default Sweetheart badge collection

Here is my tiny collection of ''sweetheart'' badges.this is diffinately a work in progress.I suppose like many other badge collectors ,''sweethearts'' are seen as a sideline to collecting the brass variety.

The term ''sweetheart'' covers silver or gold badges ,or combination, some set with precious stones. They are generally smaller versions of the brass variety, that were bought from camp jewellers (these are W.W.1 varietes),and given to wifes, mothers, sisters and girlfriends, hence the name sweethearts.Others ,such as the tie pins were worn by male family members.

Pictured, 17th (collar size).18th, 19th

21st,22nd,23rd,24th 26th ,27th(collar size),28th,30th,31st,and 33rd

Infantry reinforcements draft.

Showing my undoubted provincial bias, heres a selection of D company(Otago Company) sweethearts.

I have noticed a increased interest in ''Sweethearts'' over the past few years as collectors have come to appreciate the workmanship and detail. They are now being widely sort after pieces.

If anyone has any queries or has there own collection to post here feel free

Cheers Iain D (pukman)

We have an visiting antiques fair down in Invercargill ,were one of the stallholders is a Christchurch Militaria dealer, whose stuff ,to be fair, is always grossly overpriced. For example badges, that you can pick up for about a third of the price off other Militaria dealers.Anyway i rocked up with little expectations of a bargin. One badge caught the eye ,being a xvi (16th infantry reinforcement ) collar badge, described as a bi-metal badge. Not aware of this variety,i bought it for $45.It was in desparate need of a clean,so when i got in home i soaked it in a silver cleaning solution, and it come up as good as new.It was in fact a gold plated, with a real gold overlay on the roman numerals.Another sweetheart badge to add to the collection.

Its nice to have a win.

Hello Bill, thanks for your interest.I should have added that my sweetheart collection is of the W.W.1 vintage. There are W.W.1 sweethearts that do have some enamaling like the sterling silver one pictured with the blue enamel scroll, and some NZRB types, but enamelling become more prevalent with the W.W.2 sweethearts ,namely the predominant ''Onward'' style type. They also incorporated either 9ct gold /gold plated /or sterling silver in their design.

Cheers Iain

Default Nice lot

Very nice, you have some real beauties, great work.
Attached is my (small) collection so far, they do pop up in unexpected places.
A few are not true sweethearts I know but if it has a pin on the back it finds its way to this board.

Nice looking collections. The construction of these badges is quite delicate. I have a chance to acquire 5 Reinforcement sweethearts but the blasted pins are missing. Some are marked sterling and others have a low gold content on the lettering. Vacilaiting because of condition, price seems fair though.

Best
Jack

A nice little collection there Corey .Of course brass badge were converted by the camp jeweller into ''economy'' sweetheart badges .It depended who deep were the pockets and how your rated your girl !!!! .

This has only been a side line project for me ,but one I want to concentrate on for a while

Fell free to put your ones on Jack(Irish),I always like to see these beauties.

Here is my humble group, alas not a pin to be found. Are these worth having a broach repair done or should I just leave as is?

Best

Personally I would leave ''as is'' ,although most jewellers would be able to fix them easily . Thanks for showing

Cheers Iain

Default Uptated Sweetheart collection

Just thought I would put up a current photo of my NZ sweethearts if anyone was interested in a look.
I have them mounted/pinned on cloth behind glass in a deep frame that works very well.
Cheers
Corey
