Manchester Regiment variation
Hi All,
Just received this badge which had been described as lugged so I was hoping for a Victorian issue. It has two 14mm long copper loops but there is the remnant of a slider at top. Compared with my other Manchester Regiment badges, the lion on this one is noticeably smaller, is more upright, and has a very small crown/coronet. Probably just a manufacturer's variation. Cheers, Tinto |

Different fixings usually relate to what headgear the badge was to be attached to. Generally lugs were abandoned by 1903 except for troops stationed in India where they still wore the FSC ! When the FSC was reintroduced in the 1930s some old boys might have remembered that lugs were preferable for this type of headgear. I have a number of KLR badges whose sliders have been replaced by lugs and vice versa. They all tell a story !

Thanks for your comments, Julian. The length of the loops/lugs has me wondering if the badge was modified to be worn on a sunhelmet or similar. They seem rather long for a FSC.

I have not seen any photos showing this abdge on a sun helmet. Lots with cloth patches but not metal. Such as this one:
http://www.britishbadgeforum.com/for...ictureid=32075 The lugs may have been a poor repair rather than a a bespoke alteration. |

Hello Alan,
Yes, that's a possibility. Regards, Tinto |

These tramways badges were worn pre ww1 in India on tropical helmets, at the front rather than the side and with a red cloth background
