I think this is the last AA badge to collect (now in my collection )...... you can describe this as "rare"! There are small differences in desgin compared to the Gaunt badge. c1963 FIRMIN LONDON 1) J R Gaunt London : Bi-metal (c1957-63) 2) J R Gaunt London : AA (1963-66) 3) Firmin London : AA Only (1963-66) 4) J R Gaunt BHAM : AA Only (c1966-70) 5) HW TIMINGS BHAM : AA Only (c1970-75) 6) J R Gaunt BHAM : AA Only (c1970-75)

Hi GriffMJ,
Not that rare really but it is early and probably one of the first to have been made. I picked one up off eBay last week for 4 quid... Regards Chris |

Well...... I know that Robbie will be putting another one up in a week or so Its amazing that after the revelation of the button by Firmin that three Firmin cap badges turn up! The first I have heard about and I have been looking at them for a long time...... still, I would say that the Firmin Cap badges are the rarest. Gaunt made the first bi-metal..... Firmin must have made the first Cap badge in AA along with the buttons and NCO arm badge me thinks with Gaunt then getting the follow up in AA?

Hi GriffMJ, One standard pattern card from 17th January 1961 is marked 'J.R.GAUNT LONDON'. That does not mean to say though that Gaunt took the contract to batch manufacture though. Regards Chris |

My cloth beret badge for the LDY is in my bits and bobs album or personal stuff. It was issued to me in 1998. Hope that helps as a datum point.

So that's the 1992 patter<
I was interested in knowing who wore the cloth beret badge now, I had assumed that it was cadets only? Thanks. |

Sadly..... it is the Cadtes only. B (LDYPAO) Squadron RY wear the new Royal Yeomanry Cap badge (since 2006). However, the AA cap badge is worn in No.1 Dress on local occasion and all other LDY insignia is worn otherwise.

The "FIRIMIN" made cap badge is a 2 piece badge (like the arm badge). The Alberts crest has been made seperatley and then clipped into the main body of the badge by two small prongs. The slider has a metalic feel and thin (not AA) ..... maybe Chris can enlighten us to the early AA badge construction.
So, its my belief that the FIRMIN badge was the first issue AA Badge in 1963 along with the buttons and 2 piece Arm badges. The GAUNT made badges are all one piece including the Arm badge and probably cheaper than the better quality FIRMIN badge and therefore used on the next resupply and thereafter The very first issue in 1957, ofcourse, was the bi-metal Gaunt made badge. So there are two NCO arm badges to collect, the FIRMIN 2 piece and the one piece GAUNT (Three, techinically, also the ACF clutch/Pin copy of the FIRMIN 2 piece).

Gentlemen
Please note: The NCO's arm badge I have used in this image on my website is "incorrect", it is a Kings Crown version that is most likley a copy or a batch of badges that were not used by the Regiment. This is an old image I used when I first started to build my website.... I shall change it shortly. NB: You can also see the difference in quality in the two badges.... the KC version is very poor. The correct "St Edwards" crown or QE2 Crowned version is seen below, the Regiment was formed in 1958 and therefore would not have worn a Kings Crown NCO arm badge:- THE "KC" IMAGE HAS NOW BEEN CORRECTED TO THE QE2
