Alan, I think we have a bracket of 1916-1922 then based on the uniform and badges. Kipling had the badge as 1916-1918 but I've not seen any documentary evidence to confirm the latter date and, regardless, the badge may have been worn unofficially after that.

Rockape - totally agree! If the badge is chrome or (as currently on eBay) a silver one they're definitely out. The brass ones are very variable in quality especially with the die stamping. I suspect that a lot of these are later restrikes. I'll try and photo mine and post them here.

I also have a couple that look bronzed but have lugs or slider when I would expect blades, so they're in the fake / restrike group for me.

I cannot find any documentary evidence to support that badge being officially authorised and suspect they were a regimental initiative but the photo suggests / confirms some use.
