Default South African Scottish Regiment

It has been suggested in the British Army Section of the Forum that this title could be connected with the Regiment and have nothing to do with the Special Air Service.

Can any confirm please?

The only South African Scottish Regiment I am aware of refers to the 4th SAI Regiment of the WWI Imperial Contingent to Europe.

This regiment did not wear cloth shoulder titles as far as I am aware and this title looks of fairly recent manufacture. The only similarity I could observe is that the colour of your title is similar to that of the 2nd Battalion Transvaal Scottish.

So in my opinion this is not a South African badge, but I do stand to be corrected

The SA Scottish -- officially the 4th SA Infantry Regiment -- existed only in WW I, and it wore metal shoulder titles consisting of a springbok's head between thistles over the name "South Africa". It was known as the "SA Scottish", not "SA Scottish Regiment".

I agree that this cloth title is unlikely to have been theirs. If it is, then it must be over 100 years old.

IIRC, the Rhodesian SAS unit was called "Special Air Service Regiment" in the 1970s. Perhaps the cloth title comes from there.

I too, doubt if that is South African.

A suggestion - perhaps it is from the Belgian SAS. It is definately not Rhodesian SAS.

Have attached some titles from the Transvaal Scottish for interest.
