Oops! Badge on wrong side!

This caught my eye... the Imperial Service Badge being worn by this soldier of the 5th (Cinque Ports) Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment, on the left breast.

The conditions of service set out on the reverse of Army Form E624 (the form signed by officers, NCOs and men of the Territorial Force, who undertook liability in the event of national emergency, to serve in any place outside the United Kingdom) stipulates that the badge should be worn, when in uniform, on the right breast.

Always interesting, in my opinion, to see insignia etc., not being worn as per regulations, mistakenly or otherwise.

I thought that at first, but the shoulder title, cap badge and buttons are all on the correct sides and right way around.

You'd have thought that someone might have pointed out the error to this chap.

The badge is not even parallel to the pocket. It is possible that he borrowed the badge for the purpose of getting his photo taken.

Could it be something as daft as the photographer (or even the subject himself) asking for the badge to be temporarily relocated so that it was part of the 'light' side of the photo & therefore visible rather than hidden in the shadows?

Yeah, it could well be, couldn't it?

Then again, I suppose he could always have just angled himself differently in order to ensure the ISB could be seen clearly.

Technically, the badge is "a tablet, surmounted by the crown" .....from the original Army Order 3/1910.

Keep taking the tablets.

Would you perhaps be able to show us a copy of the AO you are referring to? The one I've read calls it 'Imperial Service Badge'. Only in paragraph 2, is it referred to as a 'tablet' and that is merely a description of its shape, as opposed to its official name. Referred to throughout the rest of the order as 'badge': in the title, in para 1(a), para 2, para 6, and para 7.

Hope this isn't too bitter a tablet pill to swallow?
