St John Ambulance, not St John's ....... they are rather keen on the distinction.

In the Great War the worsted St John badge was often worn on the left cuff if I remember correctly.

No, its definitely British army, the cloth version is much more commonly enountered (and lacks the detail of the anodised version)

You list it in the first edition of your book grumpy unless new information came to light at a later date.

Listed in COSA 1984 Section CB as
Qualified First Aid Instructor
NSN 8455-99-974-2246 Metal Aluminium Anodised Gold
NSN 8455-99-974-2072 Metal Aluminium Anodised Silver

Material Regulations Volume III Pamphlet 15 Table 7 Advanced Skill at Arms / Instructors
Rod entwined with serpent in wreath
First Aid Instructors (other than RAMC personnel) qualified on Unit First Aid Instructors Course at RAMC Training Centre

Also in Table 8 Skill at Arms Badges
Rod and Serpent in Wreath
Regimental Medical Assistants in RAC and Infantry

So an apparent and intentional distinction but the cloth versions are without the word INSTRUCTOR possible a manufacturing difficulty?

The anodised versions can be found mis-spelt 'INSTUCTOR'

I have never seen this worn during 22 years Regular Army Infantry Service (and an added few years of TA time), if worn by anyone I would have thought it would only be on the no 2 dress shirt in Barrack dress shirt sleeve order? Has anyone else actually seen it being worn and better still does anyone have a picture of it being worn?

I have come across the cloth Regimental Medical Assistant (Snake on as stick) badge, and if I remember correctly I did wear one for a while on both the KF shirt No 2 dress shirt (Barrack Dress) and on the Jersey Heavy Wool before I completed the Infantry section commanders battle course and took to wearing the crossed rifles Skill At Arms Instructors badge instead.

Of course being the British Army only one trade badge could be worn at any one time and in the end I did have a wide selection to choose from being the typical Infantry Jack of all trades.

Regards,

M

Here they are in the flesh including the previously mentioned RMA snake on a stick badge.

Cheers,

Snake on a stick! How dare you, to quote my late father "For the uneducated it is the Rod of Aesculapius!" I still have his WW2 medals which include the Atlantic Star for service on a hospital ship. Unusual group for an RAMC WO1 who was commissioned, I understand, whilst at sea and didn't know it!

Martin.
