Titles SATC ... ?
Hi Guys,
I have seen "SATC" titles with 2 different identifications... 1/ South African Tank Corps 2/ South African (Engineers) Trade Company Is there really 2 units using the same titles ?? Best regards .. Herve |

SATC shoulder is SA Tank Corps, Owen got it wrong I believe. The SATC titles look the same as a number of other WW2 versions to various units, made I suspect by the same company. The SA Trades Company theory is incorrect because there is no such unit, the correct naming was the SA Miscellaneous Trades Company. Hence if they had a title it would have been SAMTC. Sadly people will continue to confuse these titles all because they are written up as such in Owens book, we all know that it is a fantastic work BUT there are a lot of missing badges and some are incorrectly named up, these things can and will always happen with such a work. Hi Herve and Brian,
This has been a confusing one for me as well. I have seen at least three variations of the SATC title. A cast lead badge attributable to WWII Tank Corps. A brass badge separated by square punctuation marks and typical to a number of early WWII titles all atributable to WWII tank corps. BUT then there is a third variation, much larger than the previous two and very typical of a British manufactured badge of WWI period. Could this be attributed to SA Trades Company of WWI? Steven |

Hi All,
I believe that I have at least 4 examples in my collection. I will request photographs and then post them. It is possible that some variations may have been worn in WW1, this a very good question and indicates once again the unavailability of detailed information on South African insignia. Maybe someone has a postcard photograph of a tank corps member wearing them during WW2? Regards, Will |

A nice selection...the top SATC is very different, could it be WW1? I might be wrong but believe the others to be WW2 era. I have been scouting the books for decent pictures of the Tank Corps. It is a great pity I knew a SATC chap who had been awarded a MM for many years, now sadly passed on who might have solved this quandry. Brian |

Hi Brian,
At the S.A. National Museum of Military History in Johannesburg they have listed this as a WW2 shoulder title as part of their armour display. I have been looking for photographs for both wars and have not come up with anything. I think the top badge is ww1 but I am not sure. Regards, Will |

Hi William, I have one of your white metal titles but the top bar has been removed, also my title with the round dots(Milmed) came on a red ribbon. Don't know if this helps, can photo later if you want. Mike

Hi Mike,
Please do. There is a major gap in the knowledge of these earlier units. The easier units are the almost current ones going back to the 1960s but earlier times are really not confirmed or documented. Regards, Will |

I think the red/orange tab says it all, nice variations, thanks for posting. The silver one is a cast badge and given a silver wash. The rear loops are the same as a number of my cast WW2 badges. Attaching a pic of one of them, a SAAPC cast. Brian Last edited by Brian Conyngham; 24-11-12 at 02:31 PM. |
