Just remembered this tale.
There was an old chap in Crewe I knew some time ago who collected Militaria, after retiring from Rolls Royce he got a job with a local Security Firm which involved driving round various sites during the night checking to see I the premises were secure.
After that he got himself a job at the Crewe Heritage Centre where he was the gateman.
The Heritage Centre was supposed to represent the railway heritage of Crewe and was opened with much ceremony by H.M. The Queen,.Now my acquaintance was not provided with any sort of uniform with his job so decided that for the Queens visit he would provide his own uniform, I cannot remember what he wore for a jacket but for a hat he took a dark peaked cap from his collection on which he put a QE2 crown also from his collection (I cannot remember if it was brass or anodised ) but that is what he wore for the official opening of the centre and for some considerable time after as well.
So worth bearing in mind that on very rare occasions uniforms you see being worn might be completely unofficial.
P.B.
