DLI in India 1878 and later
Hi, need to identify the hat badge, cypher appear to be GPL. All items belong to "Sergt W Dubois 6 BLI" as engraved on his Second Anglo-Afghan War medal, bar - "Ali Musjid". India GSM 1854 is unnamed. BWM full size is missing.
Pin is "Ex Services - India", back # "560". French Red Cross medal is possibly for Franco-Prussian War - 1870-1871. He was Belgian born but appears to have been working in India before 1875. Please, can anyone help? Further research indicates 68 LI is infact 6 BLI (Bengal (Native) Light Infantry). Medal is correct. Hat Cypher is very complicated and could be GRI (Indian Forces). Still unable to work out dates for French Red Cross Medal. Last edited by fhaggerty; 02-07-11 at 05:46 PM. Reason: Further research analysis. |

Ali Musjid
The only regiment that might fit your man is the 6th Bengal (Native) Light Infantry.
Obviously an Indian Rgt. They were at the Battle of Ali Musjid in 1878 during the Second Afghan War. They went on to become the 6th Jat Light Infantry. Is is possible that your 68LI could be 6BLI? Good hunting, Alan. Last edited by Empire collector; 21-03-11 at 07:20 PM. |
