Hi UKBrits,

Which one?

Gold, silver or caubeen (lugs) - although two share the same pattern no (gold and silver (for some reason - looks like shade don't come into it for this particular badge)) all three have different NSN's.

Hi Chris,
This Marples & Beasley badge actually looks more like the old gold Ulster Defence Regt cap badge but in silver?
I don't know if this is a Royal Irish badge or not now, or just a manufacturers cock up!
Anyway I have posted a pic so you can see for yourself. There is a gold U.D.R badge on the left, the silver Marples & Beasley a/a badge is in the centre & for comparison a Royal Irish Regt badge is on the right.

This badge is 100% silver a/a not gold which can be seen on the pic from my previous post.
Perhaps a factory cock up?

In 1993 the gold cap badge was "inherited" from the Ulster Defence Regiment when the Royal Irish Regiment was formed from the UDR and the Royal Irish Rangers. It was initially worn in the rifle green beret but a silver finish badge was worn in the Caubeen with a green hackle. I believe that the beret is no longer worn (following a decision when Lt Col Tim Collins was CO of 1 R IRISH) so the gold badge is obsolete?

Sounds right. The Caubeen badge now has lugs and is described as such.

A/A collectors of the Royal Irish Regiment need gold and silver with slider and silver with lugs for a full 'set'. All have different NSN's.
