Default Hallamshire

Hello,

I'm working in the Tilly-sur-Seulles museum in Normandy and we have a HALLAMSHIRE patching (title, polar bear, red strip) given by a veteran years ago.

Sunday, I will buy a matching pair of Hallamshire patching.

Do you have photos of Hallams Patching in your collection or on 2nd WW pics?

Regards

Frederick

Just a few

There is a pic of them being worn in the book by Jean Bouchery, 'D Day to VE Day, The British Soldier', page 60

Frederick, greetings to you in Normandy.

The Hallamshire fought a well known battle at Fontenay Le Pesnil and Tessel Wood near to Tilley. I have visited the site many times and it is a fascinating place.

Don Scott the curator of the York and Lancaster museum, wrote a book called 'The Polar Bears from Sheffield' which I highly recommend.

Hi,

I see in the picture the normal Y&L cap badge and not the reversed collored Hallamshire badge, can anyone tell me which badge was worn ?

Albert.

Wahoo! Really interesting!!
I must find this book! It looks amazing!
I'm writing books and articles about Canadian army in Normandy (specially 7th Canadian Brigade: Royal Winnipeg Rifles, Regina Rifles and Canadian Scottish).
24 Winnipegs and 2 British of the DLI (50th DIV) have been executed on 8th June 1944 in the Castle of Audrieu and B Company of the Hallamshire discovered the bodies. That's why I'm looking for info about them.

Cheers floks and thank you very much.

Frederick

Frederick, you should also try a book by Brig Trevor Hart Dyke called 'From Normandy to Arnhem'. Hart Dyke was CO of the Hallamshires during the Normandy battles.

As well as a detailed account of the Hallamshires in Normandy, he mentions the incident at Audrieu chateau with the executed Canadians and how the Battalion padre was involved giving evidence to the war crimes trial at the end of the war.

I may be able to scan the relevant page relating to Audrieu, please send me your email address by private message.

And what about the collars? Did the officers wear the York and Lancaster collars or do the Hallamshire officers wear specific collars?
Thanks
Fred

Fred,
The Hallamshires wore the normal York and Lancs collars (pictured) at the very start of the second world war but didn't wear them later on in the war and not at the time they were in Normandy. (Although officers did wear them out of the front line on their best uniforms).

I have sent you a picture of some of the officers of the 49 Division including some Hallamshires which may help.
