Hi again Conor,
I believe the Shamrock one is the more recent. Couldn't be more specific with dates John |

Hi Conor,
I was told that the Shamrock badge is the Royal Irish TRF badge and the Green and Black badge is a landing zone (DZ) badge from begin a part of 16 Air Assault Brigade. I don't know if they are still apart of 16 Air Assault Brigade or they still wear the DZ badge. I hope this is correct. |

This is correct, the G/B was from their tour in 16AA as seen in Lt.Col Tim Collins Book.
I'm led to believe that they are back in 16AA after their two years in 52 Inf Bde |

Pretty much spot on. When attached to 16 air assault, the green/black D/Z flash is worn. Otherwise, the green shamrock on black is the regimental trf. T. |

I'm aware of 3 design types of the R IRISH TRF over the years. The first version had an embroidered shamrock; the second version was woven, but with a lurid shade of green for the shamrock; and the third version is the current one, with a darker, less radioactive, shade of green for the shamrock.
Even when the DZ badge is worn on uniforms, you'll also see from various photographs that the TRF can appear on the side of the helmet. |

To be pedantic: He's wearing a Drop Zone Flash not a TRF. The post 60's SAS rarely wear wings. When someone leaves the regiment discretion is still the rule. Due to the sensitive nature of post SF service, you can be incorrectly dressed with out fear of it becoming an issue. In the 1st example, he was serving within an Airborne brigade and possibly wanted to show he was part of the 'Machine'. Though to be honest, why high profile Officers omit to wear sabre wings is beyond me. |
