service information sought on a 57th foot crimea, new zealand vet

a friend is doing some family research and has discovered a relative she would like to know more about.
George Edward Thomas, 57th Rgt foot.
the pic attached looks like a crimean pair and NZ medal. the article also mentions this.
any information on this chap or where to look would be appreciated.
also, the family would love to be reunited with the medals if they ever come up
