Default Aden Album

Hi folks

I've just started an Album covering bits and pieces from Aden, and will be adding to it in the next few days, if anyone has any badges or other related items that aren't in my album and are wanting to part with it I would be happy to hear from you.
Cheers
Sean

Thanks for posting those images - I have nothing to add in the way of insignia etc but have a bit of an interest in the events of 1967 in Aden (the link I post whenever anybody mentions Aden):

Wow what a labour of love Leigh, I will read through it over the next few days, over the years i gathered as many bits and pieces and books as I could on Aden.
Dad was an RASC Sgt at the time in the Joint Services Press Unit, and was up at Radfan during the fighting and my Godfather was the RAF Warrant Officer in charge of the airfield construction unit in the Radfan.
Met David Birtles coauthor on the book on Aden and its Armed Forces in Stockport a few times, OMG!! I think he had more on Aden than the National Archives did...

My interest stems from having served in the battalion that had been 1RNF and had been amalgamated into the "new" regiment that I joined 4 years after amalgamation.
Aden was still a subject that grated with the "old soldiers".

Default Aden

You have a very nice collection of Aden badges. Well done.
You made mention of David Birtles. He and I wrote a book on the Armed Forces of Aden in 2000 and a revised edition in 2011. You will find most of the details you want to see and know about in those books. It was published by Helion Publishing in England. The second edition is softback and much larger plus has colour plates of uniforms. I was most interested in seeing the lanyards that you have. While I understand that the items are official sealed Crown Agents lanyards I am totally mystified that you have one for 10 Battalion FRA as the FRA only have five battalions. You are missing 5 bn lanyard which was white, and HQ Sqn which was green and white twisted. The signal sqn and other supporting units had the equivalent British Army lanyard.

Also this month I have another book coming out about the Police and Armed Forces of the Trucial Oman States and the United Arab Emirates from 1951 to 1980. It is by Helion in their Middle East at War Series. They are also currently working on my manuscript for the same series about Oman from 1921- 2012, which should be out in a couple of months. The third in the series covers Kuwait, Bahrain and Qatar 1924-1980. That should be available early next year.

Morning Cliff,
Yes I already have both of your books on Aden and will look forward to your other publications too.
I too was surprised by the 10th Bn lanyard and can offer no explanation. I am always looking for Aden military items but they are of course a bit thin on the ground.
I met up with David several times......his collection was unbelievable, more a hoard than a collection I wonder what ever happened to it all.
Regards
Sean

Default Aden Album

I note that the FRA 10 Bn lanyard is red and black. Black being a FNG colour and Red being an HBL colour. We know the FRA had 5 battalions of infantry and they merged with FNG1 on Jun 1967. Even so your crown agent sealed copy shows later in June when the FRA no longer existed. FNG1 added another four battalions making 9 in all. On paper the HBL is supposed to have joined the SAA so that would have made 10 Bn. The lanyard you have is either a former FNG1 lanyard or an unissued HBL lanyard. I am not certain that the FNG ever changed over badges to the SAA, but they may have as I have a SAA cap badge which is light gold anodized but has a black scroll, black handles and a black star. Perhaps someone can explain this one day. Attached are pix of most of my Aden badges, but I do have another 16 buttons, patches and the odd variation of cap badges. Also attached is a pix of my SAA wall shield which I purchased from the Sgts Mess in Seedaseer Lines in June 1967. That is another for you to look out for. The white metal shoulder title is an enigma. It came with a number of letters from Aden dated 1921. I do not believe that there has ever been a 67 Aden Rifles, but who knows. I have only seen two of them and both were mine.

Hi Cliff

Nice group of Aden Police badges, I have the KC cap badge (attached) and a QC chrome button - sadly attempts to photograph it only show the reflection of a fat man in a red t-shirt holding a camera.

All the best

Graham
