8th Irish Liverpool
Was at an antique show in the mall the other day and had to make a fast decision on this badge.... I was 50/50 on it being a copy but had picked up a couple of other badges I was sure of for a cheap price... my reasoning to buy this one was that if it turned out to be a dud I wasn't going to be out anything on the total deal...
On researching what I could on the forum it looks like I've ended up with a 1970's restrike copy... If it's not I'd be very happy...as it sits at least the Forum members will have a good picture of what one of these copies looks like.. |

Jim,
Your assumption was correct I am afraid. It is a restrike. regards

What are the signs specifically marking this as a restrike/fake?

I think one of the biggest indicators is that it is die struck on the back... it should be a solid cast back.... please correct me if I'm wrong on this... Jim

Jim,
This is what you need to find. There was a very interesting article in Soldier magazine July 1957 which suggested that all members of the Liverpool Irish at that time wore the badge with the bugle horn, I have often wondered about that statement and have come to the conclusion that it was an error on the part of the Reporter. JT,
Yes, the article suggests all members of the unit wore the badge with the integral bugle, but in fact the bugle only appears on officers badges. P.B.

Personally I think it has a good chance of being genuine - though I would have preferred to see a makers mark. This badge first appeared in silver plate with a slider, then in HM silver and, I believe much later, as a die struck badge - albeit often silvered. It will have ben worn up to 1967.
I bought one of these from a military tailor's shop in Liverpool in about 1969 / 1970 and assumed that it was old stock being sold off. I have one of each type in my collection and will keep it as genuine - I'd have this one off you too if you really want to pass it on ! |

Ji Jim,
I reckon Simon's right about it being a re-strike. Take a look at Pete's first image and then compare to these from a post I made a while back. Basically they were cast in solid silver (mostly by Gaunt) and would have been purchased privately by the officers. See how the castings are virtually the same? http://www.britishbadgeforum.com/for...ad.php?t=10617 |
