Would a RSM have worn an officers cap badge?

Rgds,

Yes, RSMs did and do.

OK, thanks. In that case Charlie585 added the right badge to his cap.

Rgds,

Thomas.

from my poor documentation about the coloured service cap (scan of acatalogue from: LONDON, georges philips and son ltd, 32 fleet street)

the same color and design for RE and buffs, but the RE have two buttons and the buffs 3 buttons

Sold as possibly being a RA officers side cap, I thought that this may be a RSG OR's side cap with RE OR's collar badge.
Now I have it in hand, the "inside" of the peak turns out to be of royal blue, colour as per the band around RE No. 1 caps.
The IWM have at least 3 side caps of blue with yellow piping, unfortunately they don't show photos of them so I don't know which areas are piped.
One cap is described as RA officers. two as RE, although they're described as side caps one is also described as a forage cap.
I take it that the cap I'm showing is RE OR's, is the royal blue peak lining usual for these caps?

The soldier in question started the war as a 16 year old in the Buffs 2nd Bn and was evacuated from Dunkirk before transfering to the RE and volounteering for the airborne. He went on to do a full career with the REs ending up as an RSM but never switched to a QC badge even when picked up on it and still has his KC badge along with his many medals.
Was he an RSM at the time?

I am unsure about the blue 'peak' Leigh, as one so rarely sees them turned down, but the RE did have yellow piping around the top of the crown only in the later pattern FSC.

I was wondering if the colour of the reverse of the peak was purely coincidental, perhaps just a gash bit of any coloured clothcloth to serve a purpose where it wouldn't be seen.

It does seem odd as it would only be seen if turned down in inclement weather. A rare occurrence to bother to do that methinks.
