Default Embroidered Badges

A grouping of wire and cloth embroidered badges from an estate sale in upstate New York. Do not have anymore info then that at the moment. An interesting mix of civil and possibly military related pieces.

Top most crest is likely family related, have not researched it yet. Next row has POWF and then the City of Birmingham Crest. The Birmingham badge has some faint notes on back and dates of 1877 and 1880. The P/O badge appears to be for the Post Office with a patent submit date. The large Cap Badge, ASN Co is for the Australasian Steam Navigation Co., mid to late Victorian era.

A couple of attractive crowns, Victorian and Edwardian. An Artillery Grenade which is made from 2 pieces, Flame and Granade. Below that are separate samples of grenades .

Is the badge next to the Flame/Grenade related to the City of London??

My feeling is that these were samples of a sort from a maker of embroidered badges.

Comments and thoughts welcomed, Jack

I would say that this badge is for the "Patents Office", not a sample for the Post Office, as it was the General Post Office until 1969.

Jack, your "Artillery" grenade is Royal Engineers, nine flames.

Actually it is ten flames and I'm not sure it is either RA or RE.

Pretty sure the "cord bosses" aren't cord bosses but the ball part of unfinished grenade badges

I think it is the weaving of the central flame that makes it look as though there is a tenth flame. However, there are ten-flamed grenades around in both metal and bullion/embroidered versions that were worn by RE officers.

Thanks to everyone for their thoughtful input. Any ideas on the Birmingham Coat of Arms badge? With the wreath surrounding and surmounted by a Victorian Crown could this be a Constabulary/ Police cap badge? I feel Civil Authority of some type but that is just a guess. Likely not military in nature.
Best
Jack

Jack, from studying old photos it appears that senior police officers of the Birmingham force wore a badge similar to the one you have but not with the crown. The shield was surmounted by an arm grasping a hammer and rising from a turret, symbolic of industry.

Thanks Hoot, I missed your reply and am a bit tardy.
