17th Lancers Cap Badge (never thought i would say that)
Well I was digging through some old Regimental journal's I got from Rob came across this image which I found interesting as being a former 17th/21st Lancer any one caught calling the Motto a badge will soon be corrected. But heres proof that we did at some point were a badge of sorts.

I thought if it didn't have the scroll (or Glory) at the bottom then it wasn't a motto and just a badge, because it wasn't a "motto" any more and just "death". Colin

Thats the point
That's exactly my point colin with the Or Glory removed which is the Regiments motto the item becomes just a badge it is no longer a combination.
I do however after a little more research think the badge is more like the skull and cross bones from the earlier Czapka plate which was also thought to have been the first armbadge. This is some what smaller than a sabretache Badge. I refer to the Czapka plate on the front of David Rowes book. I would put a picture up but last time I did that the copy right police came down on me rather hard. Mac |

Czapka plate
Found a Picture for ref only
This is the Motto in its earlier days of Lancering the scroll Or Glory and Skull 2 separate parts it was this skull that was also thought to be the first NCO arm badge but was to big and heavy so a different design smaller and lighter was sort. This skull also appeared on sabretaches as well as on the Helmet during the Zulu war which we have been discussing the plate its self pre dates around 1837. |
