Royal Irish Fusiliers Badge
Evening all,
I'm looking for some help with the attached badge. Combined.jpg I presume it is to the Royal Irish Fusiliers and the "8" in the box at the bottom denotes 8th Battalion? Or these types common? Most I see don't have the crown fused to the badge and have a slider rather than lugs. It measures approximately 41mm from top to bottom. Regards, Neil |

The 8 refers to the 8th French regiment whose eagle the RIF captured.

This is an example of the Other Ranks (O/R) collar badge worn c.1926 – c. 1963 on service dress. Worn in facing pairs. (see below right)
Not to be confused with the first pattern Field Service Cap (FSC badge) worn 1897- c. 1902, whose design is similar save for some minor differences in the flame pattern and eagle (see below left) Regarding the question "Or these types common? Most I see don't have the crown fused to the badge and have a slider rather than lugs. It measures approximately 41mm from top to bottom.", yes quite common and with regard to the comment on the slider, You may be thinking of the forage cap badge which has the harp & POW feathers on the grenade. Would it have also been a kilt badge, if not for RIF then for R Irish Rangers?
This badge was given to me by the tailoress at At Patrick's Bks, Ballymena in 1977. She told me it was a kilt badge, though from the single lug fitting it's a collar badge, which may also have doubled as a kilt badge? Last edited by leigh kitchen; 08-02-19 at 08:32 AM. Reason: Images added. |

with regard to the R. Irish Rangers I have not seen it used as a kilt badge, all I have seen so far is the cap badge (Harp & POW feathers), but I suppose it is entirely plausible . Regarding Kilt badges used by the R.Ir Fusiliers photos do show two badges on the kilt but I do not know what they were, anyone have any insight? John |

Thanks, my recollection is of Royal Irish Rangers Piper's wearing RUR, RIF and R Innis Fus badges on the kilt but I can't remember which of the designs the RIF grenade bore.

Gents,
I plan to list this badge on ebay shortly. I stated when I joined that I would give first refusal to any forum members if they helped with any badge ID. So if anyone is interested please let me know. Regards, Neil |
