Probably a new one for everyone else as well. Most likely a one off hat. Have to wonder if any other such anomalies were worn.

A reminder not to rule out something that doesn’t conform to the norm. You just never know. This is why I love old military photos as they can sometimes confirm a counter view.

Here are two Chindits wearing camouflaged slouch hats at Broadway in Burma, March 1944. If the men receiving blood transfusions were injured during the glider landings there is a very high probability that the belonged to the 1/King's Regiment.
The man with a similar hat in the photograph in the first post may be a Chindit officer at Lalaghat in India, where the gliders were flown in from. The chap in the middle may be Orde Wingate but I do not recognise his profile at the angle shown. Last edited by High Wood; 29-01-20 at 11:18 AM. Reason: Adding photographs |

Yes it was Wingate.
Great pictures, thanks for posting them. |

Thanks for confirming it is Wingate in the photograph, it is an unusual angle and he seems more clean shaven than he appears in other photographs taken in 1943/44. That said, he was probably the only British officer in India still wearing a pith helmet in 1944.
I would hazard a guess that the camouflaged slouch hats were introduced specifically for Operation Thursday. |

Seems to be camouflaged too - the write up mentions his Sergeant being killed next to him, I have this Sergeants paybook and medals and when researching him I found the images on the NAM page |
