Thanks Mike,

I was told it was the Shako badge but looked far too big.

Actually looking for a Rifles Shako badge if anyone has a spare.

Regards,

Chris

Chris, when you say "shako" what do you mean exactly ?

Ive found a reference to a Rifles Shako in the dress guidance. It refers to the buglers/bandsmans busby. Unfortunately ,i cannot find any more info regarding dress for bandsmen and buglers. The link within the DG takes you where there is no info.

If this is what you are referring to then, the only difference between what you have and a current Rifles one is the red felt has gone.

Ill have a dig in my box,i may have a spare one Chris. Im not 100% sure. I dont think it has the corded boss with it,just the bugle part.

Hi Mike,

It has:

NSN of 8455-99-151-8667, pattern No. D02151.

...an oval black cord beehive and small silver Rifles Bugle cap badge with screw pin backing to hold the badge to the boss. With vertical shank...

I may have my wires crossed here as thought the Rifles Band and Bugles wore an '..old fashioned tall hat with peak...' if you excuse the description - take it the band only wears the fur cap with this sort of badge?

Regards,

Chris

Hi Mike,

https://www.army.mod.uk/umbraco/Surf...nload/Get/1932

Do a search for the word 'Shako' - five occurances - page 9 the first with example of the badge which is smaller than mine.

On page 19 the word 'Shako' is used with a fur cap.

Page 149:

'...3. Ceremonial Caps. We should continue to stress the importance of wearing forage caps with Greens and No2 Dress.
Caps are not to be flattened. Shakos are only to be worn by the Rifles Bands and Bugles...'

Confused?

Regards,

Chris

If it is about 56 x 31mm, it is the 'boss' (usually with crown) worn by officers on a busby / rifle cap from 1890 onwards. It often had another badge below it - eg a large bugle.

Shako is referring to the fur cap or busby. The badge is the correct size. My examples came from Hobsons in Essex, they make them for the MOD. They were packaged in a thin hard plastic bag with no info on them at all.

Hi Mike,

This sounds the same as my example - thin, hard plastic bag.

Regards,

Chris

The Light Infantry called their fur cap a shako rather than a fur cap rifles cap, busby.

The bugle major of originally 2 RGJ then 1 RGJ wore a double badge as Julian describes. A cross without crown below an oval cord boss with a crown on it. The boss was fitted a lot higher than normal, usually so half sat above the height of the busby.
This cord boss is far smaller than the one used my the Rifles buglers.

A quote from the Rifles band and bugles dress guidance ,that was btw an utter pain in the ass to get onto my computer.

"No NSN for boss or badge as they come fitted to the shako" . All items are made by Hobsons of London.
